Grimm Dragon Barleywine

Brewed by GDBC w/ guest Carl Grimm

Green Dragon Brewing, in collaboration with guest brewer Carl Grimm, crafted this special American Barleywine in tribute to Ray Grimm, a Portland artist and icon who, through his long life, helped shaped what is now considered Portland culture.

Ray had many talents and was known for many things, among which, he was a connoisseur of all beer styles. His enthusiasm for beer brought him the tongue in cheek honor of being Bridgeport Brewery’s 1994 Old Knucklehead with his portrait featured on the label. Ray is also well known for his collaborative work on a sculpture located in Pioneer Square – the whimsical weather machine with a not very ferocious dragon predicting storms. That sculpture, with its Grimm Dragon, has delighted both locals and tourists for years.

Ray was truly a unique person that gifted a rich legacy to Portland that continues to resonate today.  His youngest son, Carl wanted to honor his father by brewing this barleywine with hops grown locally in his own backyard. Carl’s hops added just the right touch to this special beer which honors a very special man. Long live the Grimm Dragon!

Awash in Russian Imperial Stout

Made with a nod to the sentiment that we were “awash in RIS” it just seemed right to make a RIS for batch 400. This beer traces its lineage to our famous “Descent Into Darkeness” with some changes to minimize the aging to smooth it out.
Six malts and three hops were carefully blended to produce this beer. Jet black in color and sporting a persistent bitter in the 50 IBU range this young Russian Imperial Stout pours with a creamy, persistent tan head. Although strong at 9.7% ABV, the bitter and huge malt bill balance the generous amount of ethyl alcohol this beer offers. The result is a classic, strong, smooth RIS which should be allowed to warm up to expose the layers of chocolate, vanilla and roasted coffee.  Drink with caution.
